Garndiffaith Viaduct is quite simply a thing of beauty and you just don't expect to find such a grand structure tucked away out of sight, in a sleepy little village, in the Valleys of South Wales. The sense of awe and wonder that you get when you see it for the first time never really goes away. John Gardner was the Engineer responsible for its construction in 1875 - 76 and it is a tribute to his skill and the skill of the craftsmen who made it, that it remains very much as it would have looked all those years ago.
The attention to detail is superb and anyone taking the time to look closely at the formation of the arches is richly rewarded.
Walking along the Blaenavon end of the Viaduct, it is also worth taking take the time to admire the extraordinary effort that must have gone into cutting the railway line through the hill at this end. I paced a cut of at least 100 metres through solid rock!
